Buon giorno!

Today we began in Milan. We traveled from Milan through Florence, and safely arrived in Chianciano, a small town in Siena Province, Tuscany, ahead of tomorrow's schedule in Rome.

We thank God for guiding us safely through this long journey from northern to south-central Italy.

The first photo of today's journal is Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. A day that began in front of a 500-year-old mural — here in the journal, we will share the graces we received.

Today's scripture was Isaiah 55:8–9.

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." — Isaiah 55:8–9

The word "ways" refers not just to direction, but to life's methods and values.

People instinctively choose what is visible, fast, safe, comfortable, and efficient. But God's ways are sometimes slow, uncomfortable, and unclear.

Like leading us through the wilderness or taking the long way around — God's ways exceed our calculations.

Our pastor gave us time to share with the person next to us: what thoughts or methods are we holding onto that we need to let go of?

Just saying it out loud felt like the beginning of releasing something. We hope the awareness won't stop there, but will lead to actually letting go throughout the day.

We looked forward to what revelations this day's scripture would bring as we traveled across Italy.

Our first stop in Milan was Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper.

This mural is painted on the wall of the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, depicting the final meal Jesus shared with his disciples the night before the crucifixion.

More precisely, it captures the moment just after Jesus said, "One of you will betray me" — each disciple reacting in his own way.

This space was where the monks ate their daily meals. Designed so that when they looked up from their food, it was as if Jesus and the twelve disciples were seated at the same table.

This work is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To preserve it, visitor numbers and viewing time are strictly limited, and getting tickets on-site without advance booking is virtually impossible.

Many team members shared that on previous visits to Milan, they had been turned away without tickets.

We thank God for preparing and providing tickets for our entire team. On this pilgrimage, we keep encountering moments that looked like coincidence but were already prepared.

Inside, the adjoining monastery is visible. We imagined da Vinci standing before this wall for three years, trying to capture the Last Supper.

According to the account of novelist Matteo Bandello, who witnessed da Vinci at work, some days he painted from sunrise to sunset without eating or drinking — and other days he stood before the mural for hours without touching a brush, simply looking.

Perhaps those days when da Vinci put down his brush connect with today's scripture. People try to finish things quickly, but God's ways sometimes ask us to simply stand and look — for days, even years.

After Jesus said, "One of you will betray me," each disciple reacted differently.

Bartholomew leans forward with both hands on the table, as if about to rise — a gesture of disbelief, wanting to hear again.

James the Less rests his hand on Andrew's shoulder and leans toward Peter, reaching out to find out more about the betrayer.

Andrew holds both palms forward and stops — a gesture of "not me," and an expression of shock.

Peter holds a knife in his hand — foreshadowing the moment he would cut off a soldier's ear in Gethsemane. Though his heart was for Jesus, that same night he denied the Lord three times.

John, the youngest disciple, slumps toward Peter — receiving the shock and grief with his whole body.

Judas is in shadow, clutching a small purse of silver coins. He is the only figure to have knocked over the salt cellar — in the ancient Near East, spilling salt signified betrayal of one's master. Leonardo placed Judas's head in shadow, in darkness, far from the light.

Thomas raises his index finger, expressing agitation — the same finger with which he would later ask to touch the wounds of the risen Christ. Yet he is the one who would ultimately confess, "My Lord and my God."

James the Greater stands with both arms wide open, speechless with shock.

Philip places both hands on his chest and looks toward Jesus — not arguing or angry, but receiving Jesus' pain into his own heart first. Three disciples, three different responses.

At the far right, Matthew and Thaddaeus face toward Simon — not asking Jesus directly, but turning to each other. Matthew tries to explain, Thaddaeus raises questions, and Simon listens without yet reaching a conclusion. They are people trying together to find meaning in the face of a shocking word.

Leonardo designed this not merely as a mural but as an extension of space. Every line in the painting converges toward Jesus' face. No matter where you sat in the refectory, your eyes were naturally drawn to Jesus.

The ceiling and wall patterns were matched to flow seamlessly with the actual room — as if the wall had dissolved and the spaces had become one. The monks would have felt, meal after meal, as if they were seated at the very same table as Jesus and the twelve.

In 1652, monks needed a doorway in the north wall of the refectory and broke through the lower center of the painting. Jesus' feet were lost forever.

Fortunately, a precise copy made around 1520 by da Vinci's student Giampietrino survives, and it shows Jesus' feet crossed — a posture prefiguring the nails of the crucifixion, likely an intentional detail by Leonardo.

0e8871c5c66621df89a4387a927c6e82_1774409221_8386.JPG

On the opposite wall of the refectory is The Crucifixion by Giovanni Donato Montorfano.

Duke Ludovico Sforza commissioned both walls simultaneously in 1495 — Leonardo for the north wall, Montorfano for the south.

It was intentional from the start: look up during a meal and see the Last Supper; turn around and see the cross.

One wall holds the promise — "I will give my body for you." The other holds the fulfillment of that promise.

The monks ate every meal seated between those two scenes. We too live our daily lives between promise and fulfillment, between the supper and the cross.

On the way to Florence, our guide shared about da Vinci and the cultural and historical context of his time.

Da Vinci used the sfumato technique — Italian for "smoky" — which blurs the boundaries between colors to render human emotion and expression with lifelike naturalness. A technique born to portray humanity at its most human.

The Renaissance was a human-centered era. Yet da Vinci used that technique to paint Jesus — the God who became human. Perhaps it was inevitable: the art language best suited to portraying humanity was also the language best suited to portraying the incarnation.

Behind the Renaissance was the Medici family. They accumulated enormous wealth through banking and used it to patronize geniuses like da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Raphael. Money made art, and art made a city — that era's center is where we were headed.

On the road to Florence, some of our sisters shared again the grace they had received through yesterday's Parable of the Talents. Even on a moving bus, in fellowship with one another, Jesus was present. Wherever we are, it is the Kingdom of Heaven.

We arrived at Florence, the heartland of the Renaissance.

Santa Maria del Fiore — "Holy Mary of the Flower" — its great dome visible from anywhere in the city. In the 15th century, this was the first structure in human history to raise a massive dome without iron scaffolding. To the people of that time, it must have appeared as nothing short of a divine miracle.

Standing before this magnificent building, we found ourselves thinking about why the Reformation had to happen.

As Isaiah 55:8–9 says, God's thoughts are not our thoughts. People tried to draw near to God through grand buildings and lavish decoration, but God saw what was hidden beneath the splendor. And so He raised up Martin Luther — to turn the church back, not through visible things, but through the invisible truth of Sola Scriptura.

The dome of Florence was truly beautiful. But the history behind it tells us where faith leads when it loses its essence and chases its appearance. We reflected on whether our own faith is oriented toward substance, not form.

We all enjoy much. Material comfort, stable lives, and sometimes influence and recognition among people. But the moment those blessings become only for ourselves — or when the blessings themselves, rather than God, become the center — we may unknowingly be walking the same road Leo X walked.

Blessings are given to be shared. And the core of faith always comes back to one question: is God at the center?

On the bus back, we filled the space and the time with worship, tired bodies, and all.

Today's scripture was Matthew 25:31–46 — the sheep and the goats, two groups separated by the Lord.

The sheep in Matthew 25 did not plan to do good. They saw the hungry and fed them; they saw the stranger and welcomed them. You don't have to pray, "Lord, make me love people" — when your relationship with God is right, love for others flows without calculation, because those who love God naturally love the people God loves.

0e8871c5c66621df89a4387a927c6e82_1774417647_4163.JPG

This is the difference between Being and Doing.

Doing is loving because you should — it's on the to-do list, so you perform it.

Being is what flows naturally from dwelling in God. That's how the sheep were.

The selling of indulgences was the ultimate product of Doing without Being — attempting to fill God's place with actions while not abiding in God at all.

That is what Luther grasped: Sola Fide, Sola Gratia — being in God first. That was everything. That was what lit the spark of the Reformation.

But this Doing is not only someone else's story — it is ours too. We took an honest moment to share with each other: where in our own lives have we performed the form of faith through Doing alone?

We thank God for being with us through this long day of travel.

As today's scripture from Isaiah says, God's ways are higher than our ways. The history of the Reformation we encountered on this pilgrimage was carried out within God's higher plan and providence.

At the same time, we saw what the countless Doings of those who tried to outrun God's plan produced — standing before the great Duomos we visited yesterday and today, those massive structures that spoke of power by their very existence, history showed us how hollow Doing without Being truly is.

May we remember: letting go of our own ways and thoughts, and abiding in the God who is higher — that comes first.

There are not many days left in our pilgrimage. Please pray for the physical and spiritual health of our team members and the pastors who are leading us.
