Greetings from Milan today!
We traced Calvin's footsteps in Geneva, revisiting the Reformation revival that took place there.

This morning we gathered in the lobby to worship and hear the Word together.
Today's Scripture given to us is Hosea 6:6.
"For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings." — Hosea 6:6
Hosea was a prophet who proclaimed God's word to the northern kingdom of Israel. He was active during the reign of Jeroboam II, when Israel was at the peak of its prosperity.
Yet amid the busyness of ritual sacrifices and burnt offerings, their living relationship with God was crumbling.
Hosea challenges us: what God desires is not ritual or outward results, but the process we go through and the relationship with God from which our lives flow.
The word "steadfast love" (hesed) Hosea emphasizes cannot simply be rendered as "mercy." Toward God it means "unwavering, covenant-based love"; toward neighbors, "compassion and kindness." "Knowing God" (yada) is not mere intellectual knowledge. The Hebrew word yada is used to describe a husband and wife knowing each other deeply in personal union — it means an intimate, personal relationship with God. The life of one who dwells in relationship with God cannot remain unchanged.
So we hope for true inner revival — not the form of godliness, not outward renewal, but by abiding in a loving relationship with God.
After praying together for genuine inner revival rather than the mere appearance of godliness, we started the day by splitting into small groups to share on the QT passage — the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14–30).
Our pilgrimage today begins at the Geneva Reformation Wall.

This 100-meter stone wall, whose construction began in 1909 to mark Calvin's 400th birth anniversary and was completed in 1917, features four figures in large relief: Farel, Calvin, Beza, and Knox.
Farel ignited the flame of reform in Geneva; Calvin gave it theological structure; Beza carried Calvin's work to the next generation; Knox took that theology to Scotland and established Presbyterianism. Their side-by-side presence shows that God's work is accomplished not by one person, but through generations of people responding to His call.
On either side of the wall are figures such as Oliver Cromwell, Roger Williams, Gaspard de Coligny, and William I — men who carried the spirit of reform across Europe.
Though different in nationality, language, and era, their standing together on one wall shows how the flame of the Reformation, sparked by Luther in Germany, spread through Geneva to all of Europe and the New World.
That movement was not the result of any human ability or plan, but of God's sovereign providence.
Above them, in large letters, is the Latin inscription: "Post Tenebras Lux — After Darkness, Light."

This phrase originates from Job 17:12 in the Latin Bible and is both the slogan of the Geneva Reformation and the official motto of the city.
It is a confession that in the spiritual darkness of medieval church corruption and distorted gospel, God shone His light again through His Word.
The spirit of the Reformers — reclaiming the authority of Scripture and proclaiming justification by faith alone — is fully compressed into this short phrase.

Post Tenebras Lux.

The IHS symbol engraved just below "Post Tenebras Lux" represents the first three letters of Jesus' Greek name ΙΗΣΟΥΣ, declaring in stone that the source of light is none other than Jesus Christ alone.
And every figure on the wall holds a Bible in hand — bearing witness in posture alone to Sola Scriptura: God's Word alone is the sole standard for the church and for life.

We stood before that wall where our forebears in faith are engraved. In an age where material and human values have displaced God, we hope to be remembered as a generation that stood on the Word alone, carrying the spirit of reform forward — just as those who came before us did 500 years ago.

We also visited Calvin's home, just a few minutes' walk from St. Pierre Cathedral.

St. Pierre Cathedral was originally a Catholic cathedral, but when the Geneva city council officially adopted Protestantism in 1536, it was converted into a Reformed church.
In keeping with Calvinist theology, all decorations — statues, altarpieces, pipe organs — were removed, and the space was simply reorganized for the proclamation of the Word alone.
This simplicity expresses the Reformed confession of Sola Scriptura and Soli Deo Gloria in architectural form.

That simplicity extends even to the pulpit chair. The simple wooden chair from which Calvin preached for 23 years bears no ornate decoration, no symbol of authority. Just as with the cathedral itself, even the chair is emptied so that nothing draws the eye except the Word alone.
A single Bible and a cross placed before that empty space declare: the only thing to fill this place is the Word of God.

St. Pierre Cathedral was the oldest cathedral in Geneva, construction begun in the 12th century and completed in the 13th. It started in the Romanesque style, Gothic elements were added, and in the 18th century a Neoclassical façade was added — a building completed over roughly 600 years.
The layers of architectural styles within one building show how many centuries this cathedral has endured.

College Calvin, located right beside St. Pierre Cathedral, traces its origin to the Geneva Academy founded by Calvin in 1559. Calvin believed that reforming the church alone was not enough — education to establish the next generation on the Word was essential.
The first rector appointed to the school he founded on that conviction was Theodore Beza. After Calvin's death, Beza took over the entire reform ministry in Geneva, playing a decisive role in systematizing Calvinist theology and spreading it throughout Europe.
The fact that he built a school right beside the cathedral shows Calvin's theological conviction that worship and education are inseparable — a conviction passed on intact to the next generation through Beza.

Standing before College Calvin today, we naturally thought of NCBC's Vision Center. Just as Calvin founded the Geneva Academy out of the conviction that church reform alone was insufficient, and that school became a decisive channel for spreading the gospel across Europe, we believe God has plans through the Vision Center, to be built in Silicon Valley, for this generation and the next.
As God's work in Geneva was no accident, we believe the Vision Center is also within God's plan. The history of Geneva shows us why we must not stop praying for the Vision Center — for the true reformation of this generation and the revival of the next.

Leaving behind the beautiful city of Geneva, we set off for Milan.
We said farewell to our guide who had been with us for the past six days, from Wittenberg, Germany to Geneva, Switzerland.
Living as an immigrant in this foreign land, he guided us through the history of the Reformation with wholehearted dedication for six days. We expressed our gratitude with applause and words of encouragement.
We closed our farewell by holding hands and praying together, anticipating what God will accomplish through him in this land.

During the five-to-six hour bus ride, our worship and praise continued.

Taking in the breathtaking scenery descending from Switzerland into Italy, we praised God with all our hearts at the wonder of His creation.

Then we went straight into Peido. Yesterday, sessions 1 and 2 were introduced, but today we picked back up from session 2.
1. Assurance of Salvation — Assurance of salvation begins not from our deeds or efforts, but solely from God's love. Paul in prison, in the midst of fear and suffering, never stopped praising. No circumstance could shake his assurance of salvation. It rests not on fluctuating emotions but on God's unchanging Word — and as 1 John 5:11–12 says, eternal life is something we already enjoy here on earth.
2. Assurance of Answered Prayer — Prayer is a privilege every child of God can enjoy. Not the prayer of a perfectly prepared righteous person, but the prayer of a sinner coming as they are — that is true prayer. David did not try to resolve his situation on his own; he waited on God's timing. When you find yourself forgiving someone you could never forgive on your own, that is evidence of answered prayer.
3. Assurance of Victory — Victory is not gained by being strong, but is given when we come before God. Temptation comes in two kinds: one that aims to knock you down (peirazō) and one that aims to build you up (dokimazō). It matters to know which of the three — lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life — is your weakest point, because Satan knows your weakness better than you do. When we pray in the Word and stand armed in the Spirit, God Himself fights as the one who brings the victory.
4. Assurance of Forgiveness — The Greek word for sin, hamartia, means "missing the target" — deviating from the standard God has set. Repentance is not words but the act of returning to the right path. The closer we draw to Jesus, the Light, the more deeply we realize how sinful we are. If you find yourself judging and condemning others, that is a signal you have drifted from the Lord. True forgiveness is to forgive and forget — forgiveness so complete it is forgotten.
5. Assurance of God's Guidance — Proverbs 3:5–6 says not to lean on your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him. As you walk forward with your eyes fixed on the Lord alone, if you look back, you'll realize the path you walked was a minefield. Not a life where you make plans and ask God to approve them, but a life where God takes full responsibility from the start — we hope to live daily experiencing in His Word and in ordinary life just how safe and wonderful that life is.

The Bible does not specify that eyes must be closed in prayer. In fact, biblical figures prayed in various postures — looking up to heaven, eyes open, and more.
The pastor asked us to pray for the person beside us with our eyes open — looking at each other's faces, making eye contact, and blessing and praying for one another.

In the middle of the long journey, we loosened each other's stiff bodies. Within community, we experience restoration of both spirit and body.

As evening came, we arrived safely in Milan. Before heading back to the hotel, we visited the Duomo Cathedral and the magnificent Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
We thought the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague Castle on the first day was breathtakingly ornate — but the scale of Milan's Duomo left us speechless.
Geneva built on the Word. St. Pierre Cathedral emptied of all decoration. Sermons from a plain wooden chair that changed Europe. All of it stood in stark contrast to the Duomo's overwhelming grandeur. Standing here, we finally understood why they risked their lives to cry out: "Post Tenebras Lux — After Darkness, Light."
Today, the two cities of Geneva and Milan together taught us: God's work is accomplished not through magnificent architecture, but through the power of His Word alone.

On the way back to the hotel, we meditated together on the Parable of the Talents from today's QT, reflecting on how faithfully we are using the gifts God has given us for His glory. We shared what we each believe our own talents are — and what talents we see in each other.

It became a time of discovering and encouraging one another's gifts. We hope that the talents entrusted by the Lord to each of the 36 mission team members will not be buried, but that we will all be faithful servants, fully used for the glory of His kingdom. We are deeply grateful to the NCBC family, who have prayed without ceasing for all 36 team members from afar.
May we be an NCBC community that together fully walks in the Light — the Light that our forebears in faith, by God's providence, reclaimed from the darkness.
