As I look back on the past year, I reflect on what God has been trying to teach me through discipleship. Just like Ortiz says in his book Disciple, true discipleship is not merely about teaching biblical knowledge but about sharing life together through fellowship and service. This truly became evident during the Discipleship class as we cooked together, went out to share the gospel on the streets, and served side by side in different ministries.  Many of the members in this Discipleship class, I have known them for years, but this time I did get to KNOW them on a much deeper level. Beyond simply being classmates, I genuinely felt that these brothers and sisters became my family.  We shared meals, burdens, and encouragement. We took the sorrows of miscarriage in Young’s family as our own, and we earnestly prayed for TJ’s son, Alex, who became ill in Spain. Through it all, the love of Christ strengthened us and united us. They are my family with whom I will share eternity together.

Applying Acts 1:8, “ you will be my witness in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, Samaria, and the end of the earth.” I thought participating in different mission trips meant I had already gone to the ends of the earth.  But I realize that what God intended was not geographic areas, but spiritual ones. This past year, through the Discipleship class, God made me realize that when I go on mission trips, I am not just serving those abroad, but learning to serve my fellow brothers and sisters first. When I am neglecting my fellow brothers and sisters next to me, how can I say that I can serve others far away?

Through this Discipleship course, it became clear to me that supporting and strengthening my local church is vital, so that together we may reach Judea, Samaria, and the ends og the earth. Alone, I can only do so much. But by serving and strengthening my fellow brothers and sisters, we can go out together and bear a much greater harvest for God’s kingdom. In this way, the love of Christ overflows first within the church community and then extends outward to the unreached.
